Thomas Cooper De Leon papers, 1854-1943.

Correspondence regarding DeLeon's publications, essays, and poetry; correspondents include Bradley T. Johnson, Varina Davis, William Lee, and others, including letter, 5 July 1906, New York, N.Y., John S. Wise, re criticisms of Joseph E. Johnston and Jefferson Davis. Literary works include biographical sketches of various Confederate poets; speech honoring William Porcher DuBose upon his retirement from the University of the South; and genealogical information regarding various Huguenot families, including the Flournoy and the Le Moyne de Longueil families. Collection includes earlier correspondence of Civil War era, including passes, and telegrams, ca. 1864-1865, exchanged between William A. Violetti, a merchant of Mobile, Ala., and various military officials of U.S. Federal Army occupying the area; items document efforts of Violetti to exchange cotton for medicine and other supplies; including letters and passes allowing Violetti to travel unmolested, but without cotton, across Confederate and Federal lines into New Orleans, La. Also including cover letter, 3 Feb. 1908, Atwood Violetti toCooper, explaining events surrounding creation of this material, and criticizing Confederate Treasurer George A. Trenholm for the failure of his father's scheme; and scrapbook containing sketches, clippings, etc.

William Porcher Dubose served as a Confederate soldier and chaplain in Virginia and was captured and imprisoned at Fort Delaware.
